COMM0N ABBREVIATIONS : 

UAP - University Affiliated Programs for Persons with Developmental Disorders. UAPs are located at major universities in all states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and territories. UAPs target and engage in activities to support the independence, productivity, integration and inclusion into the community of individuals with developmental disorders (including Autism Spectrum Disorders) and their families.

This is a very extensive listing of persons or groups who help support individuals, families and professionals who work or live with autism, Asperger Syndrome or PDD.

Please note that every state has certain agencies that can be helpful. Here is a list of a few of those agencies and a general description:

Dept. of Special Education: This department is within the Dept. of Education and may use that specific name or a similar designation, (Dept of Special Education, Dept. of Exceptional Learners, etc.)
(Hint: You can write to your Dept. of Special Education to ask about getting a copy or your state’s special education law. You can also write to their legal department for their official interpretation of a SPECIFIC clause in your state’s special education law.)

Dept. of Vocational Rehabilitation: This department deals with employment issues for people with disabilities and is generally administrated through the state’s Dept. of Labor.

Governor’s Planning Council on Developmental Disabilities: This office is located in your state’s capital city and may use a different but similar name as the one used here. Go to www.nacdd.org/councils.htm to find the office in your state.

Protection and Advocacy: This office will also be in your state’s capital. It is a disability rights’ agency that can provide legally based advocacy services if you feel that your rights have been violated due to your disability. Go to www.napas.org for contact information for the P&A offices in every state.


Many state universities have a University Center on Disabilities (formerly known as a UAP – University Affiliated Program for Persons with Developmental Disabilities.)
The Association of University Centers on Disabilities is a national network of university centers on disabilities, which include University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disability Education, Research, and Service (UCEDD); Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) Programs; and Developmental Disabilities Research Centers (DDRC). To locate the university based center in your state, go to www.aucd.org/directory/directory/cfm?program=UCEDD. You will also find these state centers in MAAP’s state-by-state listings, followed by “UAP”.
